If this home looks familiar, that is because it was on the 2023 Munger Place Wine Walk & Homes Tour. At that time, it was down to the studs with visions of renovations plans. Tour the home now that all work has completed, and the owner has moved into this revitalized duplex. Take note of the newly tiled entryway, combination reclaimed oak wood flooring versus the original pine wood flooring, the gorgeous wallpapered shelving in the kitchen that inspired the colors of all the spaces, the clawfoot tub in the main bathroom that was found in the backyard and refinished, the beautiful new kitchen and primary bathroom that was added. Thoughtful touches such as reclaimed lighting round out the updated rooms.
The origins of this home began in late 1922 when a building permit was filed, calling for two apartments to include 12 total rooms with a brick veneer exterior for $8,500. The original owner was Mrs. Mattie Sherard, a public grade school teacher for 12 years before teaching French at The School of Cultural Arts in 1929.
The duplex has mirrored the ups and downs of the neighborhood, such as when it put up for sale for $9k in 1945, barely more than the cost to build it twenty years prior. Throughout the years, portions of the duplex were put up for rent. In 1946 the advertisement highlighted unique features including the service porch, spacious closets, fluorescent lights, Venetian blinds, hardwood floors, air conditioning, and 3 car garage (which no longer exists). This duplex is now back on the upswing, thanks to the current owner.
