In the fall of 1913, construction began on this splendid two story, twelve room brick veneer home for roughly $9,000. Originally envisioned as a boarding home for the prominent Dallas insurance attorney John S. Patterson, who was named the Texas Commissioner of Banking and Insurance when his close friend James Ferguson became Governor of Texas in 1915. Patterson subsequently moved to Austin for his post and unfortunately met his end in a bank in Teague in 1916 while serving notice to the bank president of the need to close the bank due to insufficient cash reserves. Patterson’s close friend and fellow attorney, Cullen F. Thomas took over the home in 1915. After the initial residents in the legal field, the home was used an apartment building with multiple entrances until 1978 when it was converted into a single family home as you see today.

While renovating, the current owners ensured that original architectural features were preserved including the beautiful wood trim, columns with bookcases, the multitude of transoms above doorways, heart-pine wood floors in the exterior upstairs rooms, tiled drip dry closet in the laundry room, and the white-tiled fireplace in the primary suite. This family has been enjoying the spaces that mark the home’s biggest changes including the dream chef’s kitchen and luxurious primary washroom. Before you leave, don’t be spooked by the ode to a spirit by a previous owner hanging on the wall.
