This stately home is a sub-type of the Prairie style known as Prairie Box or American Foursquare, with it’s low-pitched hipped roof and symmetrical exterior façade. The unique front door surround has Sullivanesque decorative floral and circular geometric pattern details. The home’s restoration was completed in 1999 but the first owner of this home, Edward T. Harrison, would be able to recognize the original 1911 interior features, including the leaded glass windows, bookshelves, cabinets, moldings, inlaid wood flooring, coffered ceilings, and geometric stained glass reflecting Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence.
The building permit for 4928 Junius St. was filed in the summer of 1910, calling for a 2 story eight room brick veneer home costing $4,600. Edward T. Harrison, a wealthy attorney and insurance magnet, called this home until 1914. Another prominent former resident, Sanford A. Stewart lived here from the ‘20’s to the ‘30’s, a former WWI Army Captain and district manager of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Throughout the years, this home has been the site of several meetings including the Shakespeare Study Club in the ‘20’s, happy occasions such as a wedding, and Woodrow Wilson High School graduation events. As an ideal home for entertainment, the current owners are continuing the tradition of hosting large neighborhood events, including more casual Porch Parties and more formal Holiday Parties.
Before leaving, be sure to notice the large coffin front door (big enough to fit a coffin through it), the no-longer used brick furnace and coal chute in the finished basement, and the shotgun closet in the stairwell.
